Satelligence

Satelligence specializes in providing highly detailed, semi-automated satellite-based insights and actionable results over large areas. Satelligence has world class expertise on scalable processing of radar and optical satellite images to assess patterns and trends in forests, agriculture and water.

They started three years ago with the mission to make satellite data work on the ground in the areas of the world where it makes the biggest difference.

Values

The mission is to help customers thrive on a healthy planet.

To keep our planet healthy we must reduce environmental damage and social conflict by:

  • Limiting agricultural expansion to suitable, sustainable areas (= risk monitoring),

  • Increasing agricultural productivity in existing production areas (=performance monitoring), so that expansion to new areas is not needed.

"Satelligence exists to create meaningful impact by achieving sustainable agricultural commodity production with zero deforestation."
Nanne Tolsma, Head of Client Relations

Our story: Stopping deforestation and protecting biodiversity.

Satelligence is part of the Radar Alerts Deforestation Detection project (RADD), in cooperation with WRI, Wageningen University, and companies including Unilever, Mondelez, Pepsico, Cargill, Nestle, Bunge, Wilmar, Sime Darby, Musim Mas, and GAR. We add new Sentinel-1 radar-based deforestation data and prioritised (risk-based) alerts to the Global Forest Watch platform, enabling better law enforcement at the landscape level in Indonesia and Malaysia, and showing progress towards deforestation-free supply chains. With Sentinel-1 radar-based deforestation data we can overcome cloud cover and haze problems hampering frequent observation.

Biggest struggle
Our biggest struggle is obtaining up-to-date ownership information.

Next Activity
We are currently working on a service that will be able to track how deforestation (due to palm oil) will propagate through the supply chain. Based on the risk model you can easily see where you can source sustainable palm oil from in the supply chain, and where action is required.

Our UN Sustainable Development Goals

Our organisation is most concerned with the following UN SDGs:

  • Goal 2: Zero Hunger
  • Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
  • Goal 13: Climate Action
  • Goal 15: Life on Land
  • Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals
