Ferrero sourcing 100% RSPO since 2015

We know Ferrero from their confectionery goods such as the well-known chocolate-hazelnut spread Nutella. Palm oil is an important ingredient for the company.

From zero to hero

Ferrero has made a large transition in their palm oil sourcing during the past decade. While in 2011 Ferrero started off with 4 points in the WWF Palm Oil Buyers Scorecard, the company is now at the top of the list achieving 21.5 out of 22 points.

Since 2015, 100% of Ferrero’s palm oil is sourced in accordance with the RSPO Segregated supply chain model. This means that all the palm oil used in its products is sustainably produced palm oil.

How did they do it?

To achieve this, Ferrero established and publicly communicated a time-bound implementation plan. They worked with their suppliers implementing a global responsible palm oil procurement policy, which requires suppliers to send palm oil that is traceable according to the RSPO Segregated supply chain mechanism.

In their  Palm Oil Charter Ferrero commits to responsibly source palm oil aiming at addressing the leading causes of deforestation and social issues. In this context, Ferrero works in a strategic partnership with the Earthworm Foundation, which supported mapping of the supply chain and monitored the progress in the field.

Driving continuous improvement

Ferrero was one of the first companies to join the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) in 2005. As a member of the Palm Oil Innovation Group (POIG), Ferrero started to assess its supply chain using POIG indicators. As a result of these efforts, Ferrero’s palm oil is now 100% traceable back to plantations. Traceability and transparency have been important elements in Ferrero’s approach to sustainable palm oil. Since 2018, Ferrero voluntarily discloses the list of mills from which it sources palm oil every six months.
