Our Choice

  • We choose sustainable palm oil because it helps protect rainforests, conserve biodiversity and create fair socio-economic conditions.
  • We choose sustainable palm oil because it helps achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
  • We choose to drive market change to reach 100% sustainable palm oil for food in Europe in 2020

But we can only reach these goals when we all choose sustainable palm oil. If some of us don’t, risks of deforestation and biodiversity loss will continue.

Problems and issues related to palm oil are widely addressed and some stakeholders publicly call for a ban on palm oil. But banning palm oil does not solve the problems. By moving away from palm oil, including sustainable palm oil, we lose the incentive for farmers to invest and produce palm oil in a sustainable way. And the remaining palm oil may be sold to markets with less strict sustainability criteria.

Time is running out to protect our rainforest and its vulnerable biodiversity. We will use all our power to convince companies and organisations to choose sustainable palm oil now.

The Use of Palm Oil

Palm oil is the most widely used vegetable oil. It is a high quality, versatile ingredient needed to answer growing demand for global food. It is efficient in land use and yield and it is a driver for socio-economic development in rural areas. At the same time, the sharp increase in production and use of palm oil is highly contested. It is being associated with deforestation, loss of biodiversity and human rights violations.

Choosing Sustainable Palm Oil

Palm oil can be produced sustainably. Choosing sustainable palm oil in Europe will help protect rainforests, safeguard their vulnerable biodiversity, and create fair socio-economic conditions in the global palm oil supply chain. Choosing sustainable palm oil will help achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, in particular to life on land (SDG 15); decent work and economic growth (SDG 8); and zero hunger (SDG 2). In Europe, 74 % of palm oil used for food is already RSPO certified. However, all stakeholders need to choose and support sustainable palm oil. If we don’t, we lose the incentive for farmers to become sustainable. And the remaining palm oil may be sold to markets with less strict sustainability criteria.

Who Are We

We are a group of companies and organisations that are committed to produce, use and support sustainable palm oil.  We define sustainable palm oil according to the Principles and Criteria of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, its equivalent or with additional criteria such as no development on peatland, no use of fire, no use of High Carbon Stock and High Conservation Value forests.

Our Goal

Our goal is to reach 100% sustainable palm oil used for food in Europe in 2020. We believe we can reach this goal when we share the stories about the positive impact sustainable palm oil has on the ground. We call on all companies and organizations to join us and share their stories.

Our Challenge

The solution lies in choosing sustainably produced palm oil. If we increase the demand for sustainable palm oil we can reward sustainable companies and drive the use of sustainable palm oil in other markets as well.

By talking about progress, sharing good practices about how palm can be grown and sourced sustainably and by telling the stories that show the difference on the ground, we can change the negative perception of palm oil and drive full market transformation in Europe. We need your voice to build a more constructive debate on sustainable palm oil and to earn trust and confidence that sustainable palm oil is the solution and will help protect rainforests, conserve biodiversity and create fair socio-economic conditions.
