IOI Corporation Berhad

IOI Corporation Berhad (IOI) is a leading global integrated and sustainable palm oil player. Our operations consist of the plantation business which covers Malaysia and Indonesia, while our downstream resource-based manufacturing business includes refining of palm oil as well as manufacturing of oleochemical and specialty oils and fats, with strong presence in Asia, Europe and USA.

Our commitment to the movement

Sustainable palm oil is the cornerstone of IOI’s Sustainable Palm Oil Policy. IOI achieves this through environmental protection and creating socio-economic development in the areas it operates.

"I believe that with Europe leading the use and promoting 100% sustainable palm oil, others will follow. This would mean differentiating between sustainable and unsustainable palm oil and reduced or better still, zero uptake of unsustainable palm oil which are not governed by any standards or verifications, in order to ensure no deforestation and no social exploitation."
Dr. Surina Ismail, Group Head of Sustainability, IOI Corporation Berhad

Our story

We strive to drive possible socio-economic impact and enhance the well-being of the communities around our operations. One of our initiatives is the Bukit Leelau Mini Landscape Level Approach, a multi-stakeholder project involving indigenous communities adjacent to our estate. The project involves activities of fire prevention and control, forest and peat rehabilitation and empowerment programmes for the ‘Orang Asli’ communities. We help to provide livelihood options such as nursery development, wilding collection, improved fishing activities, and so on, for a more sustainable living environment.

Counter Child Labour via Education Post-Covid: IOI’s 2021 Action Pledge with ILO

IOI Corporation Berhad (IOI) launched its IOI Child Education Initiative to provide additional educational platform access for its plantation employees’ children in Sabah on 13 December 2021. The launch of IOI Child Education Initiative forms part of ILO’s International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour where IOI had submitted its pledgeTo Counter Child Labour via Education Post-Covid: Providing Full-Day Zero Cost Educational Platform Access to our Employees’ Children” in April 2021. This pledge was introduced to help reduce the risk of having children working in oil palm estates especially during after-school hours and to bridge the educational gaps of children in our operations post-Covid by providing these children with further access to educational platforms for after-school hours period. The pledge reflects IOI’s commitment to eliminate all forms of illegal, forced, bonded, compulsory and child labour as stated in its Sustainable Palm Oil Policy.

Our UN Sustainable Development Goals

Our organisation is most concerned with the following UN SDGs:

  • Goal 2: Zero Hunger
  • Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
  • Goal 13: Climate Action
  • Goal 15: Life on Land
  • Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals

Our struggles and future plans

In the move to sustainable palm oil, the biggest struggle is to change the mindset of relevant stakeholders on the need to embed sustainability practices into the operations as opposed to being only a part of the operations.

To improve the quality and quantity of sustainable palm oil in Europe, we have engaged with our downstream players in Europe in regard to the availability and traceability of our suppliers, specifically our certified sustainable palm oil suppliers in order to ensure supply-chain security of certified sustainable palm oil.

We support the expansion of this initiative to other parts of the world especially the United States, India and China.
