Our story

Founded in 1968, started operations in 1973, LIPSA is the largest refinery of southern Europe. LIPSA has two refineries: the largest, with a production capacity of 600 000mt, is near Barcelona, and the other is located in Huelva, southern Spain, and has a production capacity of 250 000mt. Finally, in March 2019 LIPSA become Earthworm Foundation member. Our membership with EF is a step forward in our sustainability strategy, which we are committed with. We are sure that through this partnership we will support to create a 100% sustainable palm oil market in Europe.
We believe Sustainable Palm oil, as any other raw material, is the solution for the future of the planet. We are convinced that using sustainable raw materials is the solution and not banning any raw material. We must give a good example to the rest of the world by using sustainable palm oil. Only then, we will improve the sustainable practices of this important crop.

LIPSA is proud to be taking part of these three exciting transforming projects from second half 2019 to first quarter 2020 in Guatemala:

  1. Fostering successful stakeholder monitoring and verification of palm oil companies in Sayaxché, Guatemala, in order to promote the credibility of the sector and improved production practices that meet international criteria for responsible sourcing.
  2. Improving grievance mechanism operation based on EF-ASLO-Oxfam grievance mechanism audit in palm oil companies in Sayaxché, Guatemala.
  3. Organization of workshops series on Social License to Operate (SLO) for the Guatemalan Palm Oil Sector. SLO is a concept that allows companies to operate with minimum disruptions and if conflict arises, to have mechanisms to address it in a constructive way. Through these projects LIPSA is contributing to create and promote a fair economic development.

Our UN Sustainable Development Goals

My organisation is most concerned with the following 5 UN SDGs:

  • Goal 1: No poverty
  • Goal 5: Reduced Inequalities
  • Goal 8: Good Jobs and Economic Growth
  • Goal 12: Responsible consumption 8. Climate Action

Our struggles and future plans

My biggest struggle in the move to sustainable palm oil is still the bad image that palm oil has in the society and Industry. In most cases, the actors do not differentiate between sustainable and not sustainable palm oil due to this many food manufactures are moving to other refined oils. We must give a good example to the rest of the world by using sustainable palm oil. Only then, we will improve the sustainable practices of this important crop.

LIPSA is a founder member of FUNDACIÓN ESPAÑOLA DEL ACEITE DE PALMA and an active member of EUROPEAN PALM OIL ALLIANCE.
Through these associations we are promoting the use of SPO and mainly working for a better perception of Palm Oil in
European consumers and industry.
